Connected by Simon Denman
Two apparent suicides, a country apart, drive a physicist and a college student to seek answers. But what they find sucks them deep into dangerous mind-altering technology that could change the world.
CONNECTED is a speculative fiction thriller with touches of science and philosophy, which reached No.1 in Amazon UK’s Bestseller lists for both Thrillers and Science Fiction within 5 days of release.
Beginning with the funeral of a renowned classical violinist in a sleepy rural hamlet in the Lake District, a former theoretical physicist tries to make sense of his brother’s suicide. Across the country, a university student, enjoying the unexpected attentions of an enigmatic seductress, is disturbed when his best friend falls to his death from the thirteenth floor of a neighbouring campus tower block.
As each tries to unravel the mystery behind the apparent suicides, they are drawn into an obsessive search for a computer-generated fractal video sequence, with startling effects on human consciousness, and which might just pave the way for discovery of the ultimate Theory of Everything.
However, they are not the only ones to have seen the potential of this mind-altering video, and soon find themselves in a desperate race against time with gangsters from the shadowy worlds of sex, drugs, cyber-crime, and massively multi-player on-line gaming.

Born in Eastbourne, to retired parents, Simon Denman grew up alternately on the beaches of a succession of English seaside towns, and in the historic, if somewhat austere boarding school of Christ’s Hospital in Horsham, Sussex.
After graduating from the University of Essex with a degree in Electronic Engineering, he has spent longer than he likes to admit in the IT networking, communications, and Internet security industries, gradually moving from technical to marketing and management roles. During this time, he moved from the UK to Paris, back to the UK, over to Munich, across to the French Riviera, and finally back to England.
Far more importantly during this period, he was blessed with two beautiful and talented daughters, now at University themselves, and, in remarriage, the love of the most wonderful woman for whom a man could wish.
Following the publication and unexpected success of his first novel,”Connected” and, in the same year, the births of twins, he has recently moved to Cornwall with his wife and babies, where he is now working on a new novel.
While he no longer plays rugby, Simon is a moderately accomplished player of Jazz and classical trumpet, which he blows enthusiastically with any band or group that’ll have him. Any remaining time is spent reading and writing.
The Cortex is the story of ordinary people being forced to confront extraordinary events. It describes a quest to confront the face of evil against all odds. It is a multi-layered and historically rich science fiction story wrapped around a love story and a war story on a Galactic scale. It redefines evil as entity born out of benevolence. A creature of nightmare spawned at the dawn of time reborn and instilled with insidious malevolence and a desire for revenge and retribution.
Set against a backdrop of wide-ranging events the story is reduced to one small group of desperate companions moving through a Galaxy torn apart by a genocidal war. And one girl in particular bound to a seemingly impossible quest she journeys to the very edge of known space to face her destiny.
Although it is a stand alone story, there is an upcoming prequel which deals with the background mythology described in the first book. There will also be a third and final book continuing the story outlined in the first book, though of course all three novels are distinct in their own right and tell different stories set within a familiar universe.
Peter J Maher is a writer of science fiction novels and
creator of the Coalition Book Series currently living in England.
The universe contains an infinite diversity of sentient life forms. The Sallows intend to rectify this. Genocide is their business, slaughter and mass destruction their entertainment. Constantly engineering and evolving their vast army of androids, they are developing their ultimate Warrior—the Destroyer Series Mark-I (Espion). A blend of blood and machine, this new prototype looks humanoid but is driven by software and programming. It processes data and is ruthless in its pursuits. Trained as a Warrior and programmed as a spy, it will walk amongst the alien species, infiltrate and destroy. There’s just one problem. Their prototype is just a kid—and like any other kid, he’s got a bit of an attitude problem.
As Kylem reaches adolescence, he begins to question his Sallow masters. From the prisoners onboard the DaerkStar, he is learning about humanity and begins to realise that he’s just a bit too human to be either an android or a Sallow. Suddenly, he is unsure who or what he is, and there’s worse to come.
The Sallow Empire is at the dawn of a new era, with Sallows plotting against each other for ultimate control over the Empire. Caught up in the conflict, Kylem is oblivious to the role he is to play in their plans and, unbeknownst to them all, the major part he is to play in changing the fortunes of the Empire forever!

Born in the 1960’s Ab was considered an academic child but was more likely to be found daydreaming than studying. The daughter of a publican, she was left to her own devices of an evening so the TV played an important part in her childhood. Documentaries, films and dramas alike fuelled her imagination, from ‘Journey to the Centre of the Earth’ to ‘The Man from UNCLE’, ‘Tomorrow’s World’ to James Bond, each only served to encourage her already vivid imagination and enquiring mind.
“From the age of five, I would go to sleep at night and dream a new adventure. The dreams were always vivid and the stories were wild and wonderful. TV and life experiences fuelled them and perhaps that is why I was never a believer in happy-ever-afters. Even as a child, I questioned that closing sentence at the end of every story. My favourite faerie tale was Cinderella, but I always wondered what happened after the wedding. I just couldn’t accept the concept that they married and that was it; that life went perfectly for them from that day on until their deaths. My mind was plagued by questions like, did they stay happy, did they have children or was she barren? Was Prince Charming really that charming? Did he stay faithful or did he abandon Cinderella for a younger woman? If they had children, were they perfect or did one get in with the wrong crowd and end up with a criminal record?
“I was about tens old when I asked my mother some of those questions and told her about my stories. I can’t remember the exact response but I did learn one thing. That, for the time being at least, I should keep such things to myself.”
“…interesting, imaginative and Mark Twainish with a fantasy twist!”

2060: The catastrophic results of climate change lead to mass migrations, whole nations fleeing rising seas and desertification. The world at war: land, water and survival the prize. The survivors split, most scrambling to the purpose-built cities the others fortifying their settlements behind the false security of rings of land mines. Genetic manipulations lead to populations in the cities being freed from greed and violence but this has resulted in the destruction of the drive which made the human race so successful. Imprisoned behind the mines, deprived of resources, the settlements battle famine, natural disasters and despair. Populations everywhere continue to tumble.
2162: Young researcher Maia Linne contacts archivist Ris Menai for assistance with a study of Ellen Wellfit, a young girl who had lived and loved 50 years previously. Ris is an expert on Ellen and her times and agrees to help. Through incomplete correspondence we follow their increasing interest and eventual love for each other. Ellen’s story is fed to Maia by copies of transcripts of recordings taken at the time. Although the papers are also incomplete the story covers most of the events which were to prove important to mankind.
2111: Ellen Wellfit, innocent and naïve child of the safe, peaceful and sterile cities. Bix Sefune, genetically modified as a child to fight with the Sefuty Comrades (popularly known as Ferals), now dangerously charming. They meet when she seeks his help to fulfil the dying request of an old lady. Terrified of life outside the city walls Ellen, in venturing out into the countryside, is forced to cling to Bix and he, responding, finds his interest in her growing. They both dare to think of a future together but he cannot live within walls and they have to part. It is Ellen who seeks to find a way to achieve their dreams. The results of her actions hold out hope for them and also for the dwindling survivors of mankind.
An historical romance in the future, with three time periods and two love stories set against a background of climate change, child soldiers, land mines, genetic engineering and eugenics.

I spent the first part of my adult life travelling the world, the middle years studying and now have settled down to write. From the first part I have endless photographs and memories from the second I have a BSc Hons and a MA. Now in this part everything comes together.
Over the years my interests have expanded, as has my book and music collection. A short list would include reading (almost anything) science, opera, folk, gardening, philosophy, crazy patchwork, freeform crochet, ethics, social history, cooking (and eating of course) anthropology and of course climate change and sustainability.
My parents gave me, apart from a love of reading and music, an interest and curiosity in everything which in itself gives a total inability to be bored and for this I am always grateful.

As war brews on the edge of space, time is running short. Byron requires a navigator of exceptional quality to survive, and Bassa must make a decision that could well decide the fate of both men. Will their skills be enough as they embark on a mission that may stretch their abilities to the limit?
“…calls to mind the youthful focus of Robert Heinlein’s early military sf, as well as the excitement of space opera epitomized by the many Star Wars novels. Fast-paced military action and a youthful protagonist make this a good choice for both young adult and adult fans of space wars.” – Library Journal
