Unholy Alliance by Kathleen Roland

UnholyAlliancebyKathleenRowland200A decade ago, Tori Rourke, and her cousin, Vivienne, ran from the Irish mob after witnessing a brutal murder. Tori was framed by the mob, and while she served time in prison, she worried that the killer, Seamus McGinn, had kidnapped her missing cousin.

Attorney Grady D. Fletcher, defender of the wrongly condemned, appeals Tori’s case and wins her release. Now, going by Victoria Morningstar, she runs a food truck from a seedy waterfront neighborhood, hoping to find her cousin’s kidnapper.

When Grady agrees to defend a new client, Samuel Peterson, who’s been accused of beating to death the wife of a noted professor, the evidence mounts. The professor is missing, as well as his laptop that contains data dangerous to national security.

And Seamus McGinn is back, and rumors of a massive annihilation is about to begin. As they race to assist the FBI, the bonds between Grady and Tori are about to be tested. It becomes clear Grady and Tori are falling fast for each other, but what to do about it is a different story. He’s a divorced dad who wants more time with his kid. She brings danger to his front door.

Grady has questions of his own; Is Vivienne at the center of the mob’s operation? How much will it cost Tori before she learns the truth? All Grady knows is the biggest danger is the one standing right behind you.

Unholy Alliance by Kathleen Rowland
Donahue Cousins #2

Can you imagine how you would feel after you had spent ten years in a maximum security prison for a brutal murder you had not committed? Can you imagine how you would feel about the lawyer that appealed your case and won? Can you imagine how you would feel about the person or persons who put you in prison for ten years? AND can you imagine how you would feel if one of your cousins, with you when the murder took place, disappeared?

Victoria Morningstar, once Tori Rourke – Irish mob princess, has three goals when she gets out of prison: find out what happened to her cousin Vivienne, set up her food truck and bring Seamus McGinn to justice. In her pursuit of these goals she has her past knowledge, a degree she picked up in prison and the support of her appeals attorney and his staff.

Attorney Grady Donahue Fletcher is a man driven to appeal wrong court decisions and he is good at it. He is also the divorced father of a seven year old and love-phobic. He also wants to find and put Seamus McGinn in prison.

With overlapping goals Grady and Victoria begin to work together and in so doing have some madcap, scary and other adventures. Add in a bloodhound, Halloween costumes, the FBI and both good and bad cops and you have another sometimes steamy, action-packed, fast-paced adventure in the Donahue Cousins Series.

I am looking forward to finding out who will have their story told next. Will it be Danker Donahue or someone else AND I also wonder what will happen to Vivienne.

Two Hearts in Winter by Donna Fasano

Two Hearts 1200 x 1800Loss and betrayal have caused Heather Phillips to give up on love. She’s thrown herself into running The Lonely Loon, her Bed and Breakfast located on the boardwalk of Ocean City, Maryland. The “off season” in this tourist town is usually a time of rest and reflection for her; however, DB Atwell, a famous author, arrives at The Loon for the winter to finish his long-overdue novel. Daniel, too, has faced grief, and tragedy continues to haunt him. Once Heather and Daniel meet, their lives will never be the same.

Reminiscent of Nights in Rodanthe by Nicholas Sparks and culminating in a happily-ever-after similar to the great Nora Roberts, Two Hearts in Winter is a story about learning to let go of the past, about realizing that, though hardship affects us, it need not define us, and about coming to understand and truly believe that beauty is sometimes covered in scars. The human heart has an amazing ability to forgive, to heal, and to hope, especially when touched by love.

Reviews of Book 1 of the series:

“The pleasure of Fasano’s style lies in the scrumptious descriptions… and her characters’ sincere, mature desire to make things work.” ~Publishers Weekly

“Following His Heart made me go “wow”. . . I found it thought-provoking in ways I’d have never anticipated.” ~BooksAndPals.com, 5-Stars

Excerpt 1:

It wasn’t Heather’s aim to embarrass the girl; she just wanted to cut through the lies to get to the truth as quickly as possible.

“Listen, hon.” Heather leaned forward. “Why don’t you tell me what this is all about?”

She smiled, but she had to admit, after speaking with the woman at Atlantic Coastal this morning, she’d felt completely stumped. Why in the world would this girl approach her like she had? Why would she lie?

“I’m tired of proofing,” Sandra finally said. “And I don’t want to be an editor. I want to be a writer. And paying writing gigs are few and far between in this business. Newspapers are shutting down. Everyone is going digital. It’s… it’s hard.”

Heather gently pried the plastic lid off her tea. She lifted the rim to her mouth and took a sip. The heady tastes hit her tongue: cardamom, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves, and the richly scented steam wafted around her face.

The answer Sandra gave was completely plausible. It seemed like a perfectly natural thing for a journalist wannabe to do… write an interesting story about The Lonely Loon and present it to the magazine’s publisher as proof of her writing skills.

Heather nodded. “I see.” She set the cup down again, pleased by the calm demeanor that she’d been able to present. As she’d driven over to the west side of town, she’d fretted about the confrontation. But it had been simple, really. Just asking for the simple truth had been the best solution.

There were still a couple of questions niggling at her, though. “But why lie?” she asked. “Why didn’t you just tell me you were going after a writing job at your magazine?”

Sandra’s chin tipped up, and she unwittingly slid her palm over the silver laptop that sat on the table, her gaze zeroing in on Heather’s face. “You would have helped me get a story?”

“Of course, I would help you.” Heather smiled. “I like to see people succeed. If I can help you, I will.” You silly twit, whispered through her mind, but luckily she was able to keep the offensive moniker from slipping off her tongue. “Who wouldn’t like to help someone advance in their career?”

“Oh, wow,” Sandra gushed. “I don’t know what to say. I just… this is so nice of you.”

Heather’s smile widened. Now that the truth was sitting like an open book in front of them, they could get down to work. She could tell Sandra that her mother had been the one who had established The Lonely Loon, and she could explain where the name had come from. And how she’d taken over the business after her mother had died of breast cancer. She’d be sure to name a few of the neighboring boardwalk businesses and their owners to offer as much promotion to her friends as she could. The owners of the shops, restaurants, and hotels on the boardwalk were a tight-knit group.

Sandra reached into her satchel and pulled out an eight by ten piece of paper and slid it across the table.

Her career as a board level PA eventually moved into management and it wasn’t until 2009 that she finally realised her long term goal of publishing her first novel – When Tomorrow Comes.

Juggling work and writing, three other connected books – Love Lies and Promises, The Ghost of You and Me and Between Today and Yesterday – followed. They became collectively known as the Little Court Series.

In 2013 she decided to give up full time work to concentrate on her writing. Two books have been written since – The Other Side of Morning, which finally wrapped up the Little Court Series and Summer Moved On, book one of a two-part love story set in South Devon. Although you can find her characters in glamorous locations like Italy, Grand Cayman, Bali and Australia, the core of her writing remains with village life, an environment she knows and loves. Soul Survival: Instinct and Passion by Kelsey L. Alvarez

Soul Survival KLAEasy Tweet : Soul Survival: Instinct and Passion by Kelsey L. Alvarez  #TheVirtualBookcase #Readers #Authors #Books

Strangers Valerie and Ethan have both hit rock bottom. Their many issues—depression and apathy, an abusive spouse and bad life decisions—push them to seek out each other on nonphysical planes. Neither knows exactly why, but they develop a persistent need to find the other and distinguish together what is real in their dreamlike world.

Enter Emerson and Preston—a pair as close to soul mates as any couple could be. Born at the exact same time, their meeting at age five was only a formality; their souls having been linked since long before. Together they developed unique mental and physical abilities due to their exceptional neural makeup and bond. Instead of using their gifts for ill, the only thing they ever want to do is love each other for as long and profoundly as possible.

When their skills are discovered, Emerson and Preston are taken and put through a series of experiments to study and exploit what they have, to the detriment of thousands. With the lovers disabled, it is left to the damaged pair to right the wrongs being done. Ethan and Valerie set out in this romantic sci-fi series to solve a problem far beyond their own understanding, and perhaps obtain a fraction of the love the other two have in the process.

Author Bio:

Kelsey L. Alvarez, or known as KLA by those close, is new to self publishing but by no means new to writing. With an advanced degree in Public Relations, KLA is more than happy to pay the bills by working on speech writing, social media copy, annual reports, features, etc. However at one point the draw of these storylines, long simmering in KLA’s mind, could no longer be ignored.

With that said, KLA began the process of creating the characters and stories that demanded not just focus but heart. The hope is that the individuals shaped aren’t seen as two dimensional, but as the flawed imperfect, yet passionate and persistent people that they are. With elements of science fiction and humor, the main drive in the Soul Survival series is the romantic bond between the lovers.

It’s also a little wishful thinking that KLA created a relationship between two of the leads that more than likely could only exist in fiction. The concept that the profound soul-level union between them existed before life, and will continue to do so long after physical death, surviving and sustaining difficulties both subtle and intense, is one that always appealed to the author. You’ll notice though the emphasis, at least on the character’s part, is to come at their gift from God in the most simple ways. They never knew anything else, would never want to be with anyone else, and find both refuge and salvation in each other’s arms.

They don’t just live and breathe one another, they are each other’s breath.

Amazon Reviews:

Gina111

Meeting at age five, Emerson and Preston have a bond that transcends their current lives. Ethan and Valerie are looking for more. The charismatic characters intertwine to create a thrilling romantic suspense filled with mysticism and drama; including the input from a healer, a shrink, dreams, meditations, a ragging husband, and much more.

“…a single tear fell out as she did her best to remember his touch, his kiss, the feeling of him.”

“Soul Survival” will keep you entertained and engaged, wondering how it all turns out in the end…and wondering if scenarios really happen or only in fiction. Bravo to Alvarez for a well-written thriller that delivers.

Amazon Customer

I loved this story, it’s not the typical, sappy kind of love story, it doesn’t happen over night and it doesn’t ONLY focus on the magic. it shows the struggles of the characters and expresses their thoughts and emotions without being in first person. it has a wonderful story line and an even cooler writing style. The characters are relateable and it’s like you get to know them. The length was great and so was everything else.

Extract: Grandma Grace peers at me with interest over the top of her glasses, taking the box from my hands and placing it on the side. She wraps her arms around as much of me as she can reach, being at least a foot shorter, and gives me a fierce hug.

Thank you, my dear, but the only present I wanted was to see you standing here in one piece. It’s such a long journey and the weather! That rain is relentless, so many places are flooded. To think of you at the side of the road worried me to death and I will admit to saying a few little prayers as one hour turned into two, then three …’

She raises her eyebrow sternly, but it’s a brief moment before those twinkly blue eyes are full of love and laughter again.

My boy is here and that’s all that counts.’

Grandma, I haven’t been a boy for many years,’ I retort, softly, as she releases me with a tender pat on my back. She might be in her twilight years but her spirit is strong and her mind as sharp as ever. We all thought she’d fade away when Pop died, but the truth is he’s the one who would have faded if she had gone first.

You will always be a boy to me. Now, tell me more about this guardian angel of yours.’

While the tea is brewing and the cake is sliced, I hang around the kitchen as I did when I was growing up. Grandma Grace was always easy to talk to; she seemed to understand even when the words wouldn’t come. Her instincts filled in the gaps at times when even I couldn’t make sense of what was going on inside my head. After this failed relationship I began to despair of ever finding someone special.

You can’t hurry love,’ she’d told me. ‘It takes time to find your soulmate and in the process you change and grow. That’s why young love often withers, as Pop would have said. Two people either change and grow together, or they grow apart. Love is about sustaining what comes after that first hormonal rush.’

But that wasn’t the case for the two of you,’ I remember pointing out.

There has to be an exception to every rule,’ she’d replied, with a wicked smile. ‘We were lucky. Fate was kind to us. But with hindsight, we were too young and naive to understand that until much later in life. Don’t fret, Adam, there’s a wonderful young woman out there for you when the time is right.’

Sadly, when I reached that point it too turned out to be yet another huge failure. This time the consequences had been more painful than I could ever have imagined. Kelly was everything I thought I wanted in a woman and, after adjusting to the shock of an unplanned pregnancy, she was a fantastic mother. With hindsight I can see now that parenthood came too early in our relationship, we hardly knew each other. Suddenly I was a family man and yet, surprisingly, the role seemed to come naturally to me. I loved Sunday mornings the best. When a little head would appear on the pillow next to me at some unearthly hour and a warm little hand would wind its way around my neck.

Lily Grace is my sanity, my raison d’être.

Life Class by Gilli Allan

Life Class - newLIFE CLASS was a title waiting for a book. The only problem? I didn’t have a plot, or characters … or anything. I had attended a ‘life class’ (drawing or painting a nude model) for many years, and had thought it would be a great title for a novel for almost as long (way before Pat Barker published hers). Not only did I know about the subject, but the title could also serve as a metaphor. I could tell the story of some of the people who come together at a class, who, through the unfolding narrative, re-evaluate their pasts, re-examine their attitudes and move forward with a different mind-set. All well and good, but where was my story? One of the only things I was sure about was that there would be four main characters – two women and two men. I began by thinking about the jobs I might give my main protagonists.
For reasons too longwinded and complex to go into, I decided to make the life class tutor, a sculptor. I had dabbled in modelling with clay, but never pursued it seriously. I felt I needed to improve my understanding of the discipline. By chance, I had met a local sculptor, Ian Rank-Broadley. I talked to him at length about his art and his attitude to it. Also, through the Romantic Novelists Association, I know the author, Linda Mitchelmore. Her daughter-in-law, Elisabeth Hadley, is a sculptor. I was able to attend a sculpting workshop, with Elisabeth, which further broadened my understanding of the practicalities of the discipline. These two sources gave me plenty to think about regarding the mindset of a serious artist, and the difficulties of making a name and/or a living as a sculptor.
One of my friends worked at the time as a lab technician in a sexual health clinic. Not only was it an unusual job for a heroine but it occurred to me that someone in an occupation like hers could easily make damaging assumptions about the clients who come into the clinic. But in giving my heroine (whom I’d decided to call Dory) a science, rather than an arts, background, I’d created a plot problem. Why would she decide to attend a life class? The answer came to me when I had the brainwave to make her, and the other main female character in the story, sisters. It is Dory’s bossy, older sister, Fran – a stay at home mum – who has the arts background. Fran has attended the class for years. When Dory returns from London to live, her sister, Fran, nags, cajoles and pushes her sister into joining it.
Lastly I had to create the character most likely to need a sexual health check. And Dominic, the damaged teenage street kid, whose only enthusiasm is art, was born. It is his attendance at the clinic where Dory works that provides the catalyst to much of the subsequent plot.
It was only once I had established these four characters in my mind, and given each their own back story, that real inspiration – or what if? – began to happen. I was then able to begin weaving my threads together into the story that became Life Class – a story about love in its various guises.

LIFE CLASS
About art, life, love and learning lessons

Four members of an art class, meet once a week to draw the human figure.

Stefan, the tutor, is a single-minded loner, whose overriding ambition is to make a living from his sculpture. So how the hell did he find himself facing a class of adults who want their old teacher back? If he can sell the big old house he’s inherited, he’ll be able to concentrate on his work and maybe give up this part-time teaching job. Love is an emotion he long ago closed off ̶ it only leads to regret and shame ̶ but it creeps up on him from more than one direction. Is it time to admit that letting others into his life is not defeat?

Dory says she works in the sex trade, the clean-up end. She deals with the damage sex can cause. Her job has given her a jaundiced view of men, an attitude confirmed by the disintegration of her own relationship. The time seems right to pursue what she really wants in life, if she can work out what that is. She moves back from London to the country town where she grew up and where her sister still lives, yet she remains undecided whether to make it a permanent move. She’s always been clear eyed realist ̶ love doesn’t figure in her view of the future – yet she finds herself chasing a dream.

Fran ̶ Dory’s older sister ̶ is a wife and stay-at-home mother without enough to keep her occupied. Her husband’s early retirement plans throw her into a panic. She sees her life narrowing into staid middle-age. On a collision course with her mid-life crisis, Fran craves the romance and excitement of her youth. An on-line flirtation with an old boyfriend becomes scarily obsessive, putting everything she really loves at risk.

Dominic is a damaged child. He has lived his life knowing all about sex but nothing about love. If he can only find his mother perhaps he can make sense of his past. But perhaps it is a doomed quest and it’s time to look to the future? If he can grow up enough to accept the help and love that is now being offered to him, he has the chance to transform his life.

It is the collision of these four individuals, and the interweaving of their lives, which forms the story. Through the gradual unravelling of the narrative, they each come to realise that it’s not just the naked model they need to study and understand. Their stories are very different, but they all have secrets they hide from the world and from themselves. It is only by uncovering and coming to terms with the past, that they can free themselves to move on.

By the conclusion of LIFE CLASS its four main protagonists have failed to achieve what they thought they wanted, but they all realise they’ve been pursuing the wrong goals. It’s time to recognise and appreciate what life is offering them.

Biography

Me.Gilli Allan started to write in childhood, a hobby only abandoned when real life supplanted the fiction. Gilli didn’t go to Oxford or Cambridge but, after just enough exam passes to squeak in, she attended Croydon Art College.

She didn’t work on any of the broadsheets, in publishing or television. Instead she was a shop assistant, a beauty consultant and a barmaid before landing her dream job as an illustrator in advertising. It was only when she was at home with her young son that Gilli began writing seriously. Her first two novels were quickly published, but when her publisher ceased to trade, Gilli went independent.

Over the years, Gilli has been a school governor, a contributor to local newspapers, and a driving force behind the community shop in her Gloucestershire village.  Still a keen artist, she designs Christmas cards and has begun book illustration. Gilli is particularly delighted to have recently gained a new mainstream publisher – Accent Press. LIFE CLASS is the third book to be published in the three book deal.
