Babies Come From…Where?!? is the result of hundreds of interviews with children ages three to twelve, who were simply asked “Where do you think babies come from?” and allowed to answer freely, giving as much or as little explanation as they saw fit.
It began as part of a larger class project by teacher Kristi Porter and the children of Happi Kamper Child Care, located in North Muskegon, Michigan. Each child was to create an individual gift book for his or her parents and Babies Come From… Where?!? was simply to be one chapter in each child’s book.
Now, the individual answers of the Happi Kamper Kids, as well as those of the children at Community United Methodist Preschool, and the kids of Power Play Childcare have been combined. Their candid, uncensored and often hilarious answers may surprise you, or even make you laugh out loud as you get a quick glimpse into the amazing and intricate minds of some of the most delightful and fascinating children around. Enjoy!

Always a reader, Kristi Porter never thought much about writing until she entered a writing contest sponsored by the Detroit Free Press. Her nightmare vacation story – The Worst Vacation Ever – went on to be published in a travel anthology that sold over a million copies worldwide. This was followed by numerous articles published in local magazines and newspapers. As her love of writing grew, she added adult fiction and short humor pieces to her repertoire.
But writing isn’t all Kristi does. A preschool teacher, she won the Governor’s Award for her work with young children and is dedicated to the education of young children. She also enjoys bicycling, video games, photography, Facebook, and spending time with family. She lives in Michigan with her husband, son, and a menagerie of cats.

Hilly finds her quiet place by Meytal Raz-Nave

91vvisoqNsL._SL1500_Title: Hilly finds her quiet place
Hilly Finds her Quiet Place is the second book in a series in which Hilly is the main character.
As well shown in the first book, Hilly Colors Her Dreams, children straightaway connect to Hilly, who is a unique character with a charming personality, conveying important messages to children such as addressing their emotions, positive thinking, connecting to the peaceful self and more… These themes are presented through humor, fun, love and care.
Every child who reads the book drifts into Hilly’s world.

I invite you to join the journey and open your minds for healthy new thinking.

Hilly’s journey is derived from her goal to find her quiet place, a goal shared by us all. The events that happen during her quest are familiar and therefore easy for children to relate.
Hilly also shares and teaches the most effective and safe exercise in order to find that quiet place: Meditation. When exercising the quiet mind and awareness (meditation), we take a little break from our daily hustle and bustle and meet with the person closest to us… ourselves.
Meditation teaches us attentiveness toward our feelings and emotions and awareness of what we really feel – whether it is hunger, fatigue, apprehension, excitement, etc.
Help your child recognize and control his/her feelings and thoughts.

My Fingerpaint Masterpiece by Sherrill S. Cannon

My Fingerpaint Masterpiece by Sherrill S. Cannon
Children’s Picture Book – Gold Medal Winner of 2014 Readers’ Favorite International Awards, Children K-3, as well as an Illustrations Award – Also a Pinnacle Achievement Award Winner
ISBN 978-1-62857-288-9

unnamedHave you ever seen a “work of art” worth millions, which looks like something your child just brought home from school? The dual perspective of “Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder” and just a little bit of “The Emperor’s New Clothes” is evident in this clever artwork story of a child who paints a fingerpaint print in class and then loses it in the wind on the way home. Illustrated from the point of view of a child, whose identity is left to the imagination of the reader since all of the illustrations are what the child sees, the fingerpaint print is interpreted by official “judges” as well as by bystanders. Should people be influenced by what others see, or use their own self-esteem to make their own judgments?

This is the sixth rhyming children’s book by this award-winning author, whose other bestselling books include Manner-Man, Gimme-Jimmy, The Magic Word, Peter and the Whimper-Whineys and Santa’s Birthday Gift.

Former teacher Sherrill S. Cannon has won eighteen awards for her five previous rhyming books and is also the author of seven published and internationally performed plays for elementary school children. She has been called “a modern day Dr. Seuss.” – GTMA Review
Midwest Book Review:

“My Fingerpaint Masterpiece” is a delightful rhyming story about honesty, character, and creativity, with lots of jokes and hidden surprises in the illustrations and text. One day in art class a child creates an unfinished finger painting while thinking of a scene of his pet dog on the lawn. The unfinished, unsigned painting begins travels of its own on the way home with the child when a wind blows it into the Rainbow Connection Art Gallery where it is framed and hung with other paintings by mistake. Many complications multiply, and finally the unknown fingerpaint masterpiece is awarded first place! The child finally speaks up and tries to take credit for the misunderstood finger painting, no one will believe her/him. This typical reaction is accepted by both child and parents, and the upshot of the story is, a fingerpaint masterpiece by an unnamed artist hangs in the Museum Art Gallery with First Prize award ribbon pinned to it. “My Fingerpaint Masterpiece” is beautifully illustrated and delivered with style. Hidden throughout the illustration pages are images of the author’s other popular children’s books, a witty hello to fans of Ms. Cannon’s juvenile works. An audience of middle elementary students will appreciate “My Fingerpaint Masterpiece” and benefit from its positive message for creative minds of all ages.

My Fingerpaint Masterpiece Children’s Book – by Victoria Wagner Ross – San Diego eBooks Examiner. 4/19/14

Sherrill S. Cannon’s latest children’s book My Fingerpaint Masterpiece is done in rhyme as her previous books, Manner-Man, Gimme-Jimmy, The Magic Word, Peter and the Whimper-Whineys, and Santa’s Birthday Gift. GTMA Review has called her, ‘a modern day Dr. Seuss.’ She is a former teacher who has won eighteen awards for her five previous rhyming books along with seven published and internationally performed plays for elementary school children.

All of her books have been part of a fundraiser for the CureJM Foundation for over a year – 50 percent of the price of the books goes to the CureJM Foundation. JM = Juvenile Myositis, an incurable children’s disease. The site for that is found on her CureJM website.

Breaking news is that she is also in the process of creating the same kind of fundraiser for the non-profit group, helping to prevent bullying. My “Manners” books (The Magic Word, Gimme-Jimmy and Manner-Man) fit right into that niche!! The new site announce today will be her new website against bullying.

This delightful book, ‘My Fingerpaint Masterpiece’ is very much a story with a message for young and old alike. A budding young artist sits in art class dipping her fingers into a bowl of paint and ‘drew on the paper my very best scene’. But as she walked home from school the wind took the paper from her. It flew away. The young artist had never finished it!! How could they know it was to be her very special scene? A week later she sees it at a store. It was found and displayed in an art gallery where it won first prize!

Finally, as everyone described what they saw in the painting, our young painter shouted: ‘It’s my painting that you all are raving about!’ They just ignored her and said: ‘You’re only a child telling stories, I fear.’ It is easy to dismiss a child or anyone that it is only a story? Are children not to be believed because they are young?

It is very difficult to believe, to have trust and faith in the human spirit. Is it we do not trust ourselves? Do we not believe? Perhaps mistrust and inability to believe in a gift from the colors of the universe are the mystery that we do not understand. Perhaps it is found in the heart?

Another beautifully written book it is a masterpiece in belief. With simple hopeful colors from the rainbow swirling throughout the book for KJ and her team of artists at Kalpart it brings the story alive visually.

As her new endeavor to help prevent bullying takes off this week, I had an opportunity to interview Sherrill Cannon and get her insight on writing books for children. Part Two will be the full interview with the award winning author, Sherrill S. Cannon. Her books can be found on the websites of amazon, Barnes and Noble and her website.

Authors bios: I’m a writer-director of nonfiction television for channels such as Discovery, History and H2.   As a writer, I was often able to work from home, and so had extra time to play with my daughter Charlotte.  Among our games were made-up adventures set in the world of the Norse gods (thanks to old Thor comics!), and Charlotte would often make up new characters. When she was 8, she read my old copy of the D’Aulaires’ “Norse Gods and Giants,” and after that we began to adapt some of these games into a book format. We would go over plot points and characters, and while I did most of the typing, much of the story and several of the main characters are Charlotte’s – and she, of course, approved (or changed!) lines, plot points, etc.

The author grew up on her family’s farm in Victoria’s Western District, where the story is based. Writing became her way of coping when her father, Maurice (Ruby’s Pa), suddenly passed away in 2007. Her mum, Jan Hetherington, is a renowned artist, and her interpretation of Sally’s poem “Where’s Pa?” comes alive with her vibrant and detailed illustrations. “Writing and Illustrating Where’s Pa? has been a therapeutic journey for Mum and me.
